Beautiful Beaches Ferry Free (Part III)
The Athens Riviera is certainly the flashier part of the Attica coast, but its lesser-known counterparts in the northeast give it a run for its money when it comes to natural beauty and crystalline waters. In this final part of our ferry-free beach recommendations, we introduce you to our favourite beaches on the right side of the map:
Loutsa is a favorite destination for Athenians residing downtown and in the northern suburbs, as it is connected to the city via the blue metro line. Characterized by clear waters that remain shallow many meters in, this beach is perfect for vacationers with children. There are various cafes and beach bars along the coast, most of them offering sunbeds and umbrella service at a fee, or based on minimum consumption. If you are interested in a completely independent experience, hit the beach early so you can reserve some shade with your towel. Water sports are also popular in Loutsa. The calm, turquoise waters lend themselves wonderfully for skimming through them on a SUP. On windier days, windsurfing is the way to go — even if you’re not quite the surfer dude yet, there is a windsurfing school at the southern point of the beach.
Schinias is the ultimate day trip, a national park full of aromatic pine trees culminating in a seemingly endless — but actually three-kilometer-long — beach. The entire bay of Schinias is a destination for nature lovers, as it hosts one of the most rich and biodiverse systems in Attica. It is particularly popular with ornithologists and naturalists, but also with cyclists, as the flatness of the surrounding area is ideal for riding. At the end of the day though, beaches are for relaxing, and there’s plenty of that too; all along the sandy expanse of beach there are sunbeds and plenty of spots to set down a towel and sprawl under the warm Mediterranean sun.
Erotospilia Porto Rafti
Erotospilia translates to “lover’s cave” or “cave of love,” and is a beach definitely loved by many Athenians. It’s not uncommon to pass by on a warm summer’s night and see a bonfire blazing, as Erotospilia is a popular place for people to throw impromptu beach parties. The beach is close to the settlement of Porto Rafti, where many Athenians have summer homes. There is easy access to grocery stores, restaurants and tavernas, where you can pick up supplies for your own spontaneous little picnic! Keep in mind, however, Erotospilia gets very crowded in the summer months. For the best experience, visit the beach early in the morning or during the spring or autumn months.
At the end of the day, no matter which beach you pick, you are sure to enjoy clean waters, stunning views, and good company — quintessential Greece!
